“What did he want?” Jonathan asked me.

I sighed. “I wish I knew. He told me a lot about his relationship with Tara, but for the first time in my life, I’m not sure I believed him.”

“At this point, you can’t trust anyone involved in Tara’s disappearance.”

“Does that include you?” I snapped.

Jonathan frowned. “I’m only involved because I’m trying to help you. I don’t have to be involved.”

“I’m sorry. I’m a little on edge. The conversation with Jason was unsettling, to say the least.”

“I’d like to hear what he had to say.”

“I need a few minutes to process everything. Why don’t you tell me about Tamsin and Melissa first?”

“I can do that. Do you want to talk here?”

I glanced around the room. Carolyn appeared to have nodded off over her knitting. No one else had arrived while Jason and I had been talking.

“Yes, please. I’d rather not have anyone in my cabin right now,” I said.

“That’s probably for the best.”

I walked over to a couch and sat down, deliberately choosing a different couch to the one I’d shared with Jason. Jonathan joined me. A moment later, we slowly lifted off the ground.

“Are you okay?” Jonathan asked as I sat back and sighed deeply.

“Nope, not at all. Everything I thought I knew about the world just got turned upside down.”

“As bad as that?”

I gave him a grim smile. “Maybe not quite as bad as that, but it wasn’t good. I thought I knew Jason. I thought we were friends. He bought my ticket on the Lady Elizabeth. He said he wanted me to have an opportunity to start over. Now I’m wondering if he sent me on the ship so that he could frame me for his wife’s murder five sectors later. And when I say that out loud, it sounds crazy.”

“Let’s talk about the women I met. Then you can tell me about everyone you spoke to this afternoon.”

“I’d rather not talk about Jason.”

“But what he had to say could matter the most.”

“Which woman did you meet first?”

“Melissa.”

“Tell me about her.”

“I will, but while we talk about her and everyone else, keep one thing in mind. We could be looking for someone who wanted to harm Tara and frame you for the murder. Or we could be looking for someone who was willing to help her plan her disappearance. Consider each person we discuss as possibilities for both things.”

“She must have had help, mustn’t she?”

“There were a lot of parts to the plan, but trusting someone else to help adds a great deal of risk. Of course, Gloria played a part in the plan, even if she was simply hired to sell you a dress. If we could find her, we’d be a lot closer to working out what happened to Tara.”

“It all seems far too complicated. Surely all Tara needed to frame me was that scarf. She could have arranged for someone to steal it from me when I was walking back to the shuttle station and saved herself a lot of effort.
